What Kind of Freon Does My Car Need?

If your car’s A/C isn’t blowing cold air, your first thought might be: “I probably just need more freon.” But did you know that  not all vehicles use the same type of refrigerant —and using the wrong kind can actually damage your system?
At  Premier Tire , we help drivers understand what refrigerant their car uses and ensure their system is recharged safely and correctly. Here’s everything you need to know about freon and which type your vehicle likely needs.

What Is Freon?

Freon is a general term people use to refer to
automotive refrigerant —the substance that circulates through your car’s A/C system to absorb heat and cool the cabin. Over time, refrigerant can leak or degrade, leading to poor A/C performance.

The Most Common Types of Automotive Refrigerant

1. R-134a

  •  Used in most vehicles manufactured between  1995 and 2015
  • Widely available and relatively affordable
  • Still used in many vehicles on the road today

2. R-1234yf

  •  Found in  most cars built from 2015 onward
  • More environmentally friendly (lower global warming potential)
  • Requires specialized service equipment

3. R-12 (Freon-12)

  •  Used in cars built before  1995
  • Now  banned  in the U.S. due to environmental impact
  • Can only be serviced with retrofitting to a modern system
Important:  R-134a and R-1234yf are  not interchangeable . Using the wrong refrigerant can lead to compressor failure, poor performance, or even damage to your A/C components.

How to Find Out What Freon Your Car Needs

You can usually find your vehicle’s refrigerant type in one of these places:

  • Under the hood (A/C service label on the radiator support or underside of hood)
  • In your owner’s manual
  • With a quick lookup by a technician at Premier Tire

If your car uses
R-1234yf , you’ll need to visit a shop with certified equipment to recharge it properly.

Why You Shouldn’t Just Top Off Your Freon

DIY recharge kits may seem convenient, but they often:

  • Contain stop-leak agents that clog A/C lines
  • Don’t match your system’s pressure needs
  • Mask leaks instead of fixing them
  • Add incompatible refrigerant blends

At  Premier Tire , we use professional A/C recharging machines that precisely measure refrigerant levels, check for leaks, and restore system pressure according to OEM specs.

Signs You Might Need an A/C Recharge

  • Warm or weak air from vents
  • A/C clutch not engaging
  • Intermittent cooling
  • Hissing or bubbling noise from the A/C lines
  • Foggy or oily residue near compressor fittings
